The Club on Friday is changing the rating and price target on one of our favorite semiconductor stocks, while updating the price targets on four other names in the portfolio to reflect recent earnings, new internal developments and broader economic forces. We're increasing our price target on Broadcom to $1,200 a share, up from $1,000 to reflect the strong quarter it reported last week. We are increasing our price target on Costco Wholesale to $680 a share, up from $630. We are increasing our price target on Palo Alto Networks to $320 a share, up from $300. The move comes after raising our price target earlier in the month to $300, from $280.

Devoting a portion of the silicon in Broadcom's Trident networking processors to AI improves the chip's efficiency and its ability to handle other tasks such as network security. The chip, called a Trident 5-X12, can help alleviate some of the network traffic congestion, Robin Grindley, an executive in Broadcom's Core Switching Group, said in an interview. The AI portion of the chip can be turned on after a customer builds an AI model based on the traffic in their data center. Once constructed, a form of the model is fed into the chip and it can help route the traffic. The new version of the Trident is built with 5 nanometer manufacturing technology and is currently shipping to "qualified" customers.

Hock Tan, the CEO of Broadcom, said in an all-hands meeting Tuesday that he expects employees living within 50 miles of an office to return to in-person work. One submitted question was: "What can you tell me about headquarters, office locations, and remote work?" "Any other exception, you better learn how to walk on water if you want to work remote," Tan said at the meeting. Broadcom laid off some VMware employees earlier this week, BI first reported. Before the acquisition closing, Tan was already telling VMware employees that he expected them to return to the office.

SAN JOSE, California (AP) — Computer chip and software maker Broadcom has announced it has cleared all regulatory hurdles and plans to complete its $69 billion acquisition of cloud technology company VMware on Wednesday. The company, based in San Jose, California, announced it planned to move ahead with the deal after China joined the list of countries that had given a go-ahead for the acquisition. Broadcom is paying $61 billion in cash and stock for VMware and taking on $8 billion of its debt, making this one of the biggest technology deals ever. The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm and top antitrust enforcer, cleared the deal after Broadcom made concessions to address its concerns about competition. VMware, which is based in Palo Alto, California, has close relations with every major cloud company and provider, including Amazon, Google and Microsoft.

Some investors in the companies had feared about the outcome of the deal after reports said last month that rising Sino-U.S. tensions could lead China's regulator to scuttle the deal. Broadcom shares were down more than 1%, while VMware was down 4.6%. The deal was previously expected to close by Nov. 26.

Shares of Broadcom (AVGO) came under pressure Tuesday, as investors likely cashed in after the stock surged to an all-time high. Shares of Broadcom fell more than 1% Tuesday, to around $983.70 apiece. VMWare shares fell around 4.5% Tuesday, to $143.20 each, bringing the company's stock closer to the cash-consideration level spelled out in the merger agreement . As a result of the transaction, Jim argued investors may eventually assign a higher earnings multiple to Broadcom stock, which could help boost its price over time. Xi received a standing ovation as he entered the room, and two more before and after he took the stage to speak. "Whatever stage of development it may reach, China will never pursue hegemony or expansion, and will never impose its will on others. China does not seek spheres of influence, and will not fight a cold war or a hot war with anyone," Xi said. China and the U.S. reached an agreement to curb fentanyl production in earlier talks between Xi and Biden. Analysts have said Xi's speech alone is unlikely to dramatically alter U.S. business sentiment about China.

Merger Arbitrage hedge funds gained 4.4% in the third quarter, standing out as the best-performing strategy for the period, beating every category in event-driven, equity, macro and value funds, according to Hedge Fund Research . "The merger arbitrage strategy has historically thrived in a rising interest rate environment when an investor's fixed income portfolio may have suffered losses," said Michael Peck, co-chief investment officer at First Trust. As the proposed deal nears completion, the target's stock typically rises and the acquirer's shares fall. This short-term trading strategy often utilized by fast-money hedge funds typically involves multiple long and short positions, and might be too sophisticated for the average individual investor. The First Trust Merger Arbitrage ETF (MARB) and the IQ Merger Arbitrage ETF (MNA) are two popular ones that capitalize on the technique.

Club holding Broadcom 's (AVGO) investment prospects look bright – with or without cloud software maker VMWare (VMW) under its corporate roof. For now, though, the companies remain apart after Broadcom's planned $61 billion takeover of VMWare did not close Monday, as previously scheduled. AVGO YTD mountain Broadcom YTD With VMWare, Broadcom would be a company with sales split roughly 50-50 between its traditional semiconductor division — an artificial intelligence beneficiary — and software, which typically is higher-margin revenue. Without VMWare, Broadcom would have freed up its capacity to reward shareholders in a different, but still meaningful, way. Even with the buyback silver lining, our hope is Broadcom completes the VMWare deal because it should boost Broadcom's earnings over time.

The companies did not disclose details regarding China's approval on Monday, but said there was "no legal impediment" to the deal closing under U.S. merger regulations. Broadcom has received legal merger clearance in Australia, Brazil, Canada, the European Union, Israel, Japan, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan and the United Kingdom, along with foreign investment control clearance in all necessary jurisdictions. VMware (VMW) on Thursday jumped roughly 4% on reports that Broadcom's (AVGO) acquisition of the cloud and virtual machine company is likely to be approved by China shortly. China's State Administration for Market Regulation is expected to be granted conditional antitrust approval soon, according to trade publication Dealreporter. Approval of the $60 billion purchase will boost shares of chipmaker Broadcom significantly, CNBC's Jim Cramer said, citing the company's artificial intelligence efforts as another bonus. Cramer said that both stocks will continue trading higher despite an overall trying day for equities following a hotter-than-expected consumer price index print. "It's a bad day for the market because [Fed chief] Powell is a forgiving man and he's worried about the working person," Cramer said.

Following Tuesday's trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will own 80 shares of AVGO, increasing its weighting in the portfolio to 2.38% from 2.18%. AVGO YTD mountain Broadcom YTD As we've noted previously, we think Broadcom will prove to be a key beneficiary of generative artificial intelligence adoption. The acquisition stands to provide a boost to Broadcom's overall gross margin profile, given VMWare's gross margin in the mid-80th percentile. That's firmly above the 75% gross margin we saw for Broadcom overall in fiscal Q3.

We started buying semiconductor giant Broadcom (AVGO) last month and added to our position a few times since it reported fiscal third-quarter results Aug. 31. Indeed, the Thursday morning sell-off in Broadcom, which was down 4.3% at its intraday lows, is an overreaction. While Broadcom's AI revenue is growth is growing incredibly fast, the rest of its semiconductor business is stabilizing after working through its post-Covid inventory gluts.
